Video Recording Coming to Android in 2009
The news we’ve all been waiting for - video recording capabilities for Android - has been announced. It will most likely be ready to go in January 2009, but due to the holiday season, there may be delays. Just keep your eyes out for this latest exciting development for the G1. It’s not just the video capabilities that are coming either, there is also stereo Bluetooth support, video thumbnails and the ability to play them back. Plus, an onscreen keyboard along with other improvements.
Of all places for a development like this to come from, it has it origins in the Cupcake development branch of Android. Yes, I said cupcake (like the ones you eat.) We’re not quite sure why it got named that, but speculation is that it is because the apps they develop are like “icing on the (cup) cake.” Yeah, well, it was worth a try!
Ok, we’re going to give you a bit of a roll out on what you might expect to see along with the video etc. You will likely (subject to change without notice) have the ability to save pictures and attachments from text messages, be able to see what processes/apps are running and copy and paste text in the browser. This will be so easy to do, you’ll love it. All you will need to do is hold the Shift key and slide your finger across the text you wish to copy. Isn’t technology grand? Also, imagine being able to search for text in your browser using a Find feature. Great stuff for those of us who continually lose things we want to send to others.
There will also be an updated Webkit broswer, new SquirrelFish JavaScript engine, lots of bug fixes and a new kernel based on - wait for it - Linux 2.6.27. Other new additions will likely include the fact that the dial pad will no longer be able to be opened with a single tap. Seems people’s faces did the honors, and it was annoying, thus the fix. The fix was to make the dial pad open with a finger slide.
Stay tuned for further developments in this area and for the expected release date of the newest additions to Google’s Android.
